Round 7 - 29 September 2006 - Poland versus Russia, USA vs USA
Round 7: Poland vs Russia on the top two boards;
left to right: Volkov, Krasenkow (standing at back), Akopian, Areschenko,
Bartel, Kobalia
John Saunders reports: Today we have Poland vs Russia on
the top two boards - half an Olympiad match, in fact. Krasenkow vs Kobalia
and Volkov vs Bartel. Another Polish victim is Socko, who didn't put up
much of a fight against Areshchenko's Giuoco Pianissimo (do super-GMs
still play that? Apparently so). The Russians came out on top: Kobalia
beat Krasenkow while Bartel struggled to a draw against Volkov. Akopian
beat Neverov in his best style so four players are in the lead tonight
(Akopian, Areshchenko, Kobalia and Bartel). Subbaraman Vijayalakshmi continues
to make good progress amongst the super-GMs, holding Landa to a careful
draw. She now probably needs 1/2 for a GM norm. There was also an all-US
clash between Anna Zatonskih and Alex Shabalov, which went to the Manx
Monarch after a hard game. I'm sorry we cannot bring you live play - the
wireless access in the hotel doesn't reach as far as the tournament hall.
It will also be interesting how Subbaraman Vijayalakshmi fares on board
five - she is having a great tournament. One of the early games to finish
featured an interesting zugzwang situation at the end. Had Alan Walton
played 41 h3 and not 41 h4 against Craig Hanley, he may have forced Black
to give ground. But 41 h4? Kg7! left him with no viable moves. A nice
finish for Elisabeth Pähtz. Peter Wells scores a brilliant win over
Andrew Ledger. Nearly every one of the moves in his final combination
were found by Fritz. Hmm, I thought he was spending rather a long
time in the toilet... seriously though, folks, a very nice finish. First
time control: only 17 games finished of 41. That is very unusual.
Lots of hard chess today. Incidentally, I'm having to help out with time
scrambles because David Welch is poorly today. Luckily nothing difficult
to cope with, although Neverov left himself only a few seconds for his
last three moves before the time control against Akopian. Richard Palliser's
win against Subbaraman Meenakshi was quite entertaining.
MEANWHILE, IN ELISTA...
At the moment there is a buzz of conversation in Port Erin about the
goings-on in Elista (see elsewhere on the BCM website, or click
here to read the latest press releases). Given the circumstances,
there has been an outbreak of toilet humour (which is of course one of
the cornerstones of British culture). Inspired by all the controversy
over the rest room facilities at the WC match (erf erf), we think that
FIDE should immediately institute a new title to go alongside international
director, international organiser, etc: FIDE Toilet Monitor (or FTM for
short) which, after the candidate has inspected a sufficient quantity
of international plumbing over the course of a number of years, could
lead to the exalted title of International Toilet Monitor (ITM). Given
the attractive rate of pay on offer for such roles as chairman of appeals
committees (they generally earn rather more than grandmasters for rather
less effort), perhaps FIDE could decide on a similar remuneration for
the important work of an ITM, as this is clearly going to be one of the
most important roles in chess in the 21st century. In fact, I would be
only too happy to use this opportunity to put my own name forward for
such a role on the grounds of my long familiarity with IT and telecommunications
equipment, my small stature (making it easy for me to move freely in and
out of even the smallest rest room facilities) and the fact that I am
a happily married man and unlikely to be suspected of any ulterior motive
in spending long periods in such places. If wireless internet connectivity
were to be extended to the smallest room in the chess tournament, then
it should be quite possible to combine the functions of the ITM and the
hitherto lowest status functionary in chess officialdom's hierarchy -
the tournament webmaster. Somehow I always knew that that is where my
chess career would finally take me...
