Round 6 - 28 September 2006 - The Coach Trip
The Coach Party - click on the photo if you want to see a bigger version
John Saunders reports: As is usual at the Monarch Assurance,
we were treated to a coach trip round the island for about 2½ hours
on the morning of the Thursday round. The weather has held up pretty well
this year, though it was windy and rainy on Wednesday. But today was very
pleasant. The trip took in Douglas Head, with views over the Isle of Man's
capital, then a minute of two at Tynwald (just long enough for me to take
the above photo - actually it consists of three photos cunningly linked
together to produce a panoramic shot - can you spot the two joins?), then
onto Peel, where we very nearly mislaid some Russian grandmasters, then
to Glen Maye (to see a very pretty waterfall) and then back to Port Erin.
The coach driver did a great job of telling us all the local history and
gossip whilst steering his coach round all the hairpin bends and slopes
that are a feature of the Manx countryside. For my part, I had to put
up with all the jokes about my 2004 calamity when I failed to make the
coach trip because I arrived a whole two minutes late. I got to the hotel
door at 10.02am to see the back end of the coach disappearing off into
the distance. It had left at 10.00am on the button. This year David Sedgwick
arrived at 10.05am and the coach waited for him. There is no justice in
the world, is there? I suppose that reflects the relative status of arbiter
and webmaster respectively.
Left: "Go west, young man!" Dennis Hemsley giving Bjarke
Sahl directions. Middle: The Glen Maye Waterfall. Right: "Grandmaster
overboard!" - Vitaly Golod in some danger of falling from the battlements
of Peel Castle, but saved by Petr Kiriakov. Konstantin Landa looks on.
To the games... Bartel-Krasenkow was a genuine and interesting draw,
with the younger player sacrificing the exchange to get a big d-pawn.
Shabalov-Areshchenko was another interesting draw, though I've a horrible
feeling someone will tell me it has all been seen before. If I had John
Nunn's excellent book on the 6 Bg5 Sicilian Najdorf with me, I would be
able to look it up, but it's back home. Kobalia-Yakovich was a win for
White and gave me a lot of problems trying to decipher the handwriting;
but it has now been included in its entirety. I was most impressed to
find that Mikhail Kobalia can read his own handwriting (which is more
than can be said for Viktor Korchnoi) - many thanks to Mikhail for his
help with this. The Subbaraman sisters had a good day, particularly Vijayalakshmi,
who won a complicated game against Kazhgaleyev. She is now only half a
point behind the leaders. Elisabeth Paehtz seemed to have a comfortable
position but she then drove Postny's king where it wanted to go and blundered.
Anna Zatonskih seemed a lot worse against Ikonnikov but he then messed
up the defence and was mated by the US women's champion. Second major
scalp in a row for Gary Quillan who moves to 4/6. Dave Collier lost to
Tatiana Kononenko but Fritz revealed that White missed a big chance with
25 Rf4! which seems to win material.
