SOME VERY GOOD NEWS...

I'm not finding the time to do full reports on the tournament as yet. There is just too much to do, but maybe I'll catch up eventually. [One piece of very good news I want to share with you is about the tournament's future. There will be a 17th Isle of Man International Chess Congress in 2008. Note the new name as there is a change of sponsor; in fact, there will be multiple sponsors. The 2008 tournament is pencilled in for 20-28 September 2008 at the current venue, the Ocean Castle Hotel in Port Erin. Jean Depin remains as tournament director, and the rest of the control/publicity team is as now.]* IMPORTANT NOTE - SEE BELOW. The open tournament will be renamed the Richard Furness Memorial Masters (perhaps we can refer to it as the 'Furness Masters'). I personally am extremely pleased (as I'm sure many of you will be) that the late Richard Furness is to be honoured in this way; few people did as much for British chess as Richard. The other two tournaments will retain their names as at present: the Tony Bridson Major and the Dennis Hemsley. Everything I said about Richard applies equally to them. So it's business as usual! Last but not least we must thank Mr Patrick Taylor and Monarch Assurance for their fantastic support and generosity over the past 16 years. In conjunction with Dennis Hemsley, Mr Taylor has been instrumental in putting the Isle of Man on the chess map.

Some quick draws on the top boards. Sulskis lost quickly to Bartel. Gurevich also lost in short order to Kuzubov. Georgiev made a horrible miscalculation on move 22 which resulted in his king getting chased up the board and mated.
